Utah to Nevada (no pictures)

No pictures today. Just a long dreary drive away from beautiful Salt Lake City to middle of northern Nevada. It was a hazy morning and the lake and the mountains as we were departing were very beautiful. I found the brown mountains of Nevada pretty dreary though.

In the morning, I was at Petsmart restocking on supplies and I realized there was a Banfield Animal Hospital at the store so I brought Chummie in for an evaluation by a very nice, very thorough, and *very handsome* :hearts: Vet. After a comprehensive exam and medical history, he took some xrays of her hips. He showed me that she has pretty severe deterioation due to arthritis that had probably gotten inflamed from all the extra exercise on this trip. He said that her spine is also painful but the image looked pretty good there so he thinks it might just be caused by the extreme wiggling she is doing to swing her legs with minimum impact on her hips. He then did some bloodwork to confirm liver and kidney function were normal before prescribing Rimadyl for now and suggesting I consider hip replacement for the future. . . .

I know Rimadyl is dangerous but she is so much happier after taking it. She also slept the whole way in the car, I think due to the painkiller she was given for the xrays.

I also wanted to add that the Holiday Inn chain has been really consistently great -- clean, friendly, nicely furnished, safe locations, etc.

That's all for today. . .

Awww poor Chum :(
I'm glad she is doing better with some painkiller...
Poor Chum, hopefully she will feel better for a while. Val I missed your pictures, but it sounds like you are making great progress.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Thanks for the update, Val! Hugs from us!
Oh, poor Chummie!! Rimadyl is potent stuff. We tried it for Drez but it upset her stomach. Hopefully Chum doesn't feel that side effect. Give that sweet girl a big hug and kiss from Aunt Chris please!!

(BTW, did you keep the number of that "very handsome" vet?? )
Is he an available handsome vet??
Will you be stopping on the return trip?
All I can say is, you just never know where your
prince may be.

Poor Chum, hope she has some relief with the rimadyl.

Give Chummie a big hug and a kiss from us in Nova Scotia. Sounds like the downtime in SF may be what she needs to recharge for the trip home.

I to am curious if you got the vets number.......
I'm sorry that Chum's arthritis is acting up and making her feel bad. Hopefully, the Rimadyl will give her the relief she needs to enjoy the trip and feel much better. I just love her sweet smile. Please give her a kiss & rub on the head from me.

:D Handsome vet! :D
Hope you are all aware that NSAID's KILL.
PLEASE do research on Rimadyl, Dermaxx & Metacam BEFORE giving to your pet.
I lost my beloved Dobie from a Rimadyl reaction.
Keep truckin'! I'm excited to see more pics and I hope Chummie feels better soon!
We had put our first sheepdog on Rimadyl when he was around 11. Eventually it lost its effect and we ended up using Deramaxx. It does really make a difference. My understanding is that Rimadyl is tough on the liver & you should do bloodwork regularly. Deramaxx is tough on the stomach lining.

Our puppy is on Deramaxx right now for what is going on with his back side issues. It's helping a little.

Yes, I am aware of the risks. That's why I've avoided giving it for the past year but at this point, she seems to really need it to retain ordinary mobility. I will look into other (surgical) options but those have risks as well.

Thanks for your input.
Hugs to dear Chummie!!! At a certain point the medication becomes necessary regardless of the risks. You have certainly explored all options and should be commended for the great care and life you are giving your dogs. Glad to know you are still trekking and miss the pictures by golly. That's quite the clever set up in the car.

I hope they stop in Vegas. :excited: And yes the Westin on Flamingo WELCOMES large breeds. I think the Four Seasons welcomes smaller breeds and I think some of the other Marriotts also welcome large dogs. I couldn't live in an unfriendly dog city.
