Figuring your multiple dog monthly costs

Has anyone ever sat down and figured out exactly how much their own animals cost them, on average, each month? I started thinking about it after Wynette mentioned that her 4 dogs (counting Marcus) were eating 48 pounds of food every 2 weeks. With my three, I realized just this year (I only had vet records on all 3 this this year) I'm averaging a little over $550 a month. Usually, I just buy what they need and don't think twice about it but I was really surprised that it was that high when I broke it all down. I should be driving a much better car! (Heck, I could even make the argument that the new car should be factored in since I bought it for the dogs!)

That number includes: 30 pounds of dry food for the boys every 2 weeks, 6 cases of canned Merrick food for Lucy that lasts the whole month; treats per month (milk bones, training style treats, edible rawhide and rawhide bones), toys (usually one or 2 a month), day care (once or twice a week at $50/week), all the vet visits and preventative meds (not to mention allergies and the giardia we caught a couple of times this year) and 3 times of professional grooming since March. The $550 doesn't include the incidental "Oh, they'd like this, I should buy it" type of purchases either.

Ask me again why I don't have kids? Can you imagine the monthly bill I'd rack up then?

I've been thinking about that too since we've had to change brands so much due to Yuki's allergies. I know we're not spending near as much as you are though. We took her to the vet yesterday just for her to say "yep, it MAY be kennel cough. just give it another week" (no medicine, nothing) ...and it cost $60 WITH a military discount.
No. I haven't.

I'm honestly afraid to do it. 8O

It would probably send me into shock.
I haven't either... it's scary.
I do know that I've spent an average of close to 10,000 a year on them though. 8O
To figure it out exactly per month would be a bad idea... a really bad idea... LOL
too scarey, but I do know I spend more money on my two dogs hair than my own and thats sad.....somehow I can find the money for the dog groomer, but when it comes it my hair, I don't have it. :P
I don't want to know how much I spend
My husband records everything so we know how much we are spending on what. So we know exactly how much we have spent on our two cats for three years. Our cats run us about 650 a year. But so far we have spent about 1,800 dollars on the dog just getting started. And we have only have him just over a month. Lets hope that trend doesnt continue! 8O I've come to the conclusion that dogs require a whole lot more accessories then cats. Hehehe and I am about ready to make some more purchases at Ryans Pet Supply. Need to buy clippers. Sigh

Though it is a whole lot less expensive then having a child. They are supposed to cost 250,000 or so and that is not counting sending them to college. Thank goodness we don't have to send dogs to college
Robin....depends on how many classes you plan on keeping Edgar in...lol.....it could go on for years....
Wow...I don't even spend that much on my kids per month! lol

We don't spend that much on the animals. Maybe $100 total for the 2 dogs and 2 cats...majority of that expense is food.
8) I dont want to think about that  :!:
It's frightening 8O I would not even want to know!! Gosh I would probably be a millionaire by now if no dogs in my life

I was just looking at the dog equipment, tables, trolleys, dryer, crates, grooming stuff etc etc and that's not including what they woof down in food. Also over a lifetime of the dog, vet costs, worming, heartworm and so on and so on and so on, OOOOOH I have a headache

One of those "what you don't know does not hurt" LOL
Lots!! Don't forget about backyard fencing, etc, etc. . . 8O

I don't spend much more than that for my two...maybe $200 a month average over the year? Mostly for food.

We don't really buy toys, as we have lots and they do not tear them apart at all. Hey, we still have the 2 squeaky sunflowers from the Michigan picnic! One is an outside toy and one is an inside toy, and they are still in fine shape.

Dixie's meds are manageable, and Bosley's is healthy, so only an annual check-up etc. for him..... Whoops! Forgot about his eye surgury!....tests, visits, drops, meds and the procedure was well over $2000....I'll sit back down now....
It's total shock at my house if you start counting all the costs. When we got Lucky he was heartworm positive so we had the vet costs to get him healthy again. Sam - not heartworm positive but very sick and straight in the hospital once we got home with him. London - healthy baby but needed shots. Plus the adoption costs, the cost of driving to get them (Alabama, Missouri, and then Florida). Monthly food and treats cost, toys, additional grooming tools (they wear out faster when you are doing 3-4 sheepies), professional bathing (flea baths & grooming) every two weeks, monthly meds for health maintenance, obedience classes cost. Let's add in the cost of 6 pairs of shoes eaten, 1 blackberry cell phone chewed and crunched, a couple of remote controls eaten, socks eaten, wash cloths eaten.... 8O

All of that $ just from April 2005 to current....

If I go back to January 2005 it's more as we had Winston and his cancer treatments.

Let's just say I could have probably paid cash for a nifty new sports car or two if I didn't have dogs. 8O

But I wouldn't trade them for the world, although I have to say when they are being pests I do tell them I am considering putting them all back up for adoption...but I don't think any of them believe me.
Food and regular treats, probably about $75 a month When I travel for work we have a dog sitter come over for a lunch time potty break - 30 minutes, 15 dollars, that costs me about $120 per month. Any time we go on vacation without Bailey it costs $30 per day for boarding, this month it will be $120 for a long weekend. I just dropped $45 the other day for treats/toys, new water bowl, a new larger collar and a pirate hat that I'm sure will stay on about 15 seconds. So I'm up to $400 this month. Yikes!

We're averaging 1 well vet visit and 2 "emergency" what-did-he-eat now visits per year which brings the total up as well.
Boy I feel like a CHEAPSKATE.....my 3 dogs cost me under $100 a month.....we switched foods and they eat less of the new food so a huge bag lasts longer and its better food than what I was feeding before...

I'm not counting vet visits....last month Merlin had a $400 poop at the vets(and they didnt even charge me for boarding him)
nor am I counting fencing in the new back yard, an outdoor dog pen and indoor dog pen...that was about $4000 total

Lol. In all fairness, my boys are huge and go through a lot of food. Plus, the canned food that Lucy eats is one of the most expensive you can buy so, of course, it's the one she likes the best. She's finicky and a lot of foods don't agree with her well and I've never seen her so willing to eat since switching to Merrick. It's almost $2 a can depending on where I get it and we go through about 3 cans a day (Lucy gets 2, the boys split one). Unfortunately, it adds up fast.

I don't even want to think about factoring in destroyed items. I don't have many but Bear seems to have elite tastes.
Oh yeah, the Merricks canned is awesome. We use it for special treats at our house. It's about the same - a little under $2 here too. It's worth it though!

I've never kept track here of cost, but go thru about 40 lbs of Canidae every 2 weeks, so that's about $60. Add in the inevitable treats, toys, brushes and hair products, gas to events and training, entry fees, etc......
I guess it adds up. Thankfully the vet bills have been few and far between - I hope the TLC continues to pay off!

Did you ever try it yourself? I wanted to see if it really was human grade. It's not horrible. A bit reminiscent of Dinty Moore Stew but a lot more bland. I won't be dining on it but I can see why the dogs like it!
All I want to say is....... ARE YOU CRAZY? DO YOU WANT ME TO GET DEPRESSED? Just kidding. It's just after over $4,000 8O in medical bills this year I don't dare add up the costs. I just don't want to know.

I just look at it as an investment in my happiness.

On another note, my vet has lions and she told me they get her retirement money.
Actually, I DID try it!!  . I tried the Wingdings and the Thanksgiving Dinner. I agree - tastes like canned stew without the salt!

It smelled so good I had to try it................
At tax time my husband likes to add up (what he can track) all that is spent on the dogs. I personally don't think it is good for his heart!! About 5 years ago my Savannah blew a disk $5,000 ,then last year my Jack blew out his knee$ 1,800 then about 7 mos ago Guinness ran into Savannah and caused an injury to her back $2,000 Then Jack is on thyroid medication Savannah is on bladder meds, Bailey has Pancreatic enzyme insufficency that costs about 120 bucks a month. Heart worm and flea prevenative, suppliments. Annual vet visits, dog food ,toys. Geeze I could have a speed boat, summer home and maid service. But I don't think that would make me as happy as my dogs. Oh yea we purchased the dyson animal for my shedding dogs and I can't keep track of all the grooming tools and shampoo!!!!! I feel faint. 8O 8O 8O
