web drawing programs?

Anybody have hints on a drawing program an absolute beginner could use almost immediately? I want to design something to be screened onto aprons. Or would I be better off going to a graphic designer and paying them?

It depends on how intricate of a design you want and what file format your screener will accept. Many places that do print work will only accept certain types of files so check with them before you buy/do anything.

Ultimately, if it's something like a logo, you can probably have that designed relatively cheap and spare yourself the headache. If you're close to a college or university, check with their graphic design department.
It's for an apron, words and a graphic. We have the words in mind, just need something to go with it.

thanks for you help
Many screen printers will have an in-house design service that they may make available to their customers. They obviously prefer ready-made art work, but they may charge you a nominal fee to set the type and place an image (clipart or otherwise) onto your design.

They probably won't create something original for you, like a logo, but they often have books upon books of clipart and images that you could look through and choose.

Call any local screen printing shop and ask about their design services. They may give you a deal if you stay with them for both printing and designing. They will also format the files properly...

Many "beginner" design programs are not very powerful as far as file formats, and printers usually require some pretty high-end graphics. That may be more of a pain than it's worth.

Good Luck!
I've tried a few programs but because I am left handed they are all almost impossible for me to use without a graphics tablet. I plan to get one in the not too distant future, but for now, they just frustrate me.
Anything I draw on the computer looks like a kindergarten kid did it.
I'll find a printing company and see what they can knock together. I have some ideas I'm sure they can smooth out to a form presentable to our committee. Anyway, think of the time I'll save not having to learn a graphic program! CorelDraw still stares at me from the bookshelf.

Thanks for you feedback.

HIRE ME!!

of course I can't do the print but the image is a different story :)

seriously you can get a student to do it pretty cheap. you could put an ad on craigslist but you would still have to have it printed on the aprons somewhere
There are different font websites on the net. Try this for some options: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=font
My husband did the designs for his drumsticks completely online and got the font/type for them off sites like these.
If you are really stuck, I can give you the name of a great graphic artist who does all of the band's work.

If you were really, really nice, maybe VerveUp could point you in a good direction for desining on the web since that's her thing.
This one?
Fonts 4 All
A really good free font site is www.dafont.com I get most of the fonts that I use from there.

Another option, if you have any drawing talent, is to just create something and scan it in. Don't forget, you're doing this for a physical item so you don't have to be bound by anything related to the Web or computers!
Thanks :!: for the font sites! I forgot one of the words is in greek, so I would need a font to handle the few weird letters.

My main problem is trying to get words around the margin of an oval. Seems to me I had a newsletter program that would do that back in the early years.

You should be able to do that in powerpoint or photoshop too.
Cool, I forgot I have powerpoint.........a new program to learn! At least it is already "in the box." This ought to occupy my mind for a long while. Photoshop too, huh? Another brain project. You guys want to come over and sit next to me and how me how........I'm sure the dogs would move if you give them a cookie.
Check with the screen printer too about how they want the file before you do anything. I get many people at work who try to "help" by sketching out what they want in Microsoft Publisher or another program that I can't even open on my Mac and I end up having to redesign something new from scratch anyway. I feel bad for them because they did a bunch of work for nothing-- well, I feel bad for some of them. Others deserve the extra work. ;)

No, I just need something to show a committee, I know it would need to be done over by a pro which is why I'm trying to keep it simple.
Cool, I just wanted to save you before you ended up pulling hair out or anything!
