Turns his bum towards me?

My first post, although I'm always here for advice.
What does this behaviour mean?
My Chum walks toward me, turns around right in front of me, then either stands or sits with his bum facing me. When we had another OES here, the other dog turned & showed his bum to Chum, when Chum walked in the room.
Is this a submission or dominance issue?
Thanks

My dogs have always done this and I just thought it meant they wanted there butts scratched. Maybe there is more to it?
Butt scratch...
I vote it's for the butt rub. So does Mulligan. ;)

Two paws up.

I have only owned sheepdogs; do all other breeds do the same thing?
That's what I always thought it meant too.
Both of mine do it and without doubt they are looking for a butt scratch.

I love that you have a "Chum" too.
Yeah, bum rub. And in case I miss the point, Archie will back into me and wiggle his rear. And even more so when he gets his scratch/rub.
My dog doesn't walk around or stop and put his butt in front of me, except when he is trying to stop me from moving, but whenever he is laying next to me on the floor or in the bed, his butt is always facing me! I always sigh and say why do i get the butt????? Cant you just lay next to me?? I thought maybe it was a protective thing ( like he is on gaurd) and also watching for the cat to come around!
But then again I scratch his butt alot anyway cause its so cute, so maybe his needs aren't as great! :lmt:
I always thought it was their way of asking us to have them sit on our laps!

I have bearded Collie and Lhars apso as well, but it is only
the sheepdog who do this

Welcome to the forum Mamafurr
I thought it was they couldn't scratch that bit themselves except when wiggling on the floor with all four feet up! :go:
I pet sit, and one of the dogs I took care of, a lab/retriever/newfoundland mix, did the same thing.
My sister's dog does this. She's an Austrialian Shepard and Beardir cross. It means I WANT MY BUTT SCRATCHED NOW!!!!
My Aussie's both did this too. So does the Pud Monster.
Ollie and Bart both did this, now Chewie is starting too. (That covers the OES's!) I have never noticed it with our past/present non-OES dogs. That would be Labs, Bassets, Brittany, Min Pins, Rat Terriers, German Shepherd, and various mixed breeds.

I don't usually give a butt rub (or maybe I sometimes randomly do); I think they just want to be touching their humans, and still be keeping an eye on things.
Both of mine do this more frequently to Steve than me. Steve will sit and scratch their butts for a while. I personally enjoy their actual faces and I'm not much of a butt scratcher.

I do notice that Fozzie will give Annie the butt when he's testing whether or not she wants to play. He'll bark at her, get a look and then turns and puts his butt in her face. It must be some kind of defense in case she decides to nip. Probably hurts less on the tush and the desire to bite that area is less...hmm...wonder why
Welcome to the forum! :)

Yay! another Canadian :) You're not far from me at all :)

My dogs all do that too, I think it's for butt rubs LOL
My parent's sheep does this more than mine does. She'll walk up to you and then about 2 feet away turn around and walk backwards the rest of the way. My husband LOVES to scratch her bum, so she does the backup a lot more when he's around
My parents get mad because my husband then leaves and they are stuck with a backing up sheepie. They want to install a truck's "beep beep beep" noise on her...
Wow, thanks for the quick replies.
I had thought the bum scratch a strong possibility until the 2nd OES was here for the day & that dog turned & faced the wall with his bum facing Chum. He stayed like that for about 2 minutes until Chum left the room, then he turned around & walked away.
Strange eh!
thanks again

:)
My border collie Cassie always did this - loved her butt rubs! She also did it a lot when we were playing together!
Butt scratch, remember looking eye to eye with a dog is a challenge to them.

Then there's Fox who likes his neck and shoulders rubbed so he buries his head between our leg......standing or sitting, he doesn't care.......he just burrows right in 8O

Face kissing is another issue; some dogs love it, others think it's a challenge or attack........our dear Paige was one. Took her years to realize I was just lovin' her.
Both of my dogs (lab and lab husky X) do this...when they are upset with me for some reason - i didnt make room on the couch for one of them or if one of them wanted to go outside and i missed it and if i was not paying enough attention to them...my dogs make it quite known that they are upset. They sit with a hmmph, back towards me and a glance back to see if I even noticed

Not the same thing. My Mad does this, and Sybil and Mace have on occasion as well. They sit well away from you and make a point of making sure you know they are IGNORING you. 8) This usually happens if I'm working another dog.

The butt turn and sit ideally on some part of your body is entirely different as they back into you to make sure you can't help but notice their backside is there for the scritching.

Yep, butt scratch. If I'm not paying attention Chauncey will just back up to my leg and rub his bum on it, much as a pig scratches itself on a fence
Well Dog Fancy had OES's on the cover a couple years ago and the article was really a good sweet article about the breed. At one point they said although they may sound mean from behind a closed door they are not guard dogs and will give away the silver for a scratch on the butt!!

Thought that was funny and my sheppies have always done the but thing too. :wag: (I love this smilie)
Murphy does this as well and usually gets a bum scratch, although it has always looked like a guarding mechanism.
I go with the butt scratch!  Both of mine do this...they fight for my lap, then turn their butt to me for a scratch...never gave a thought that it meant anything else
yup, Sunny does the same thing. So glad that she's not the only one! She comes over and is all cute and fluffy, I scratch her head and she just turns around and gives me her bum. If I don't comply, she gives me her face again, as if to lure me to pet her again. It always works, and I pet her again, and then she always gives me her bum right away again. I almost have to put her into a head lock to just pet her where I want to!

You learn to quickly turn them as they start to turn so they go beyond their butt and then grab the head as it comes around.
