Ty is in knee surgery :-(

I just returned from leaving Ty at the Vet Hospital. He is having knee surgery this morning. The Vet said both knees are bad but only wants to do one at a time.

I'm a wreck

Thinking of you and Ty, Ginny. I know it's so hard when you can't be with him.
(((hugs to you and Ty)))
Oh no! Poor baby!!! Did you know before this that he would need surgery, or did you just find out?
Ginny, thinking of you and hoping all goes well.

{{{{{HUGS}}}}}
Oh no, that's terrible :(

When tehy have surgery like that, what is the recovery like? Will Ty have trouble walking or be in a lot of pain? :(

I can't imagine how stressed/worried you are esp. if you're anything like me!!

Hugs to Ty!!
((((hugs)))) from us. And Simon the basset sends healing drool. It is so hard to have one of your "kids" in surgery, even if it is planned and routine. Good luck Ty!
Hope all goes well with the surgery. It is never easy when one of your kids has to have surgery.
We hope that Ty is back home and resting comfortably soon. Guinness and Murphy are keeping their paws crossed for you.

(((Hugs))) to you all!
Thanks, I am supposed to be working but all I want to do is sit at my desk and stare at the screen. Luckily I have help this morning but she leaves at noon and then I actually have to deal with PEOPLE 8O

Somehow I have to figure out how to keep Tasker and him apart for 6 weeks 8O 8O 8O 8O He'll stay at the hospital til Friday night but I can visit him tomorrow. The recovery period is 6-8 weeks with no weight bearing for the first few. I just bought a set of four steps for him to on and off the bed.

And, didn't one of my patients come in and tell me about their "friends'" maltese that died last week during the same surgery :(
Sorry Ginny  Lil Ty will be up and about in no time! All of my good thoughts are with you today!
Hope all goes well.
Big hugs :hearts:
Poor Ty! Poor Ginny! I'll be sending you "get well soon" thoughts!
Thanks a lot  to the tactless patient who tells you their friend's dog died in the same surgery. Geez!
Poor Ty! I hope Tasker is a great a nanny dog for Ty. ;)
Hope Ty has an uneventful surgery and recovery goes well. Just get a puppy pen from PetsMart or something to keep them separated.

:plead:
Poor little guy! I hope he's up to his usual self in no time!!
good luck Ty! you'll be better in no time. (you too, ginny)
I'll be the opposite of your patient, Ginny, and tell you that Kayli came through her knee surgery fine and made such a fast recovery that the vet was astonished!

Anything from the vet yet?
No, they told me not to call til 5:00 :( :(
Well, it has to be 5:00 somewhere . . .
There you go, 5:00 somewhere. Just claim that you are calling from a different time zone!
((((HUGS)))) Ginny!!

I'll be back after 5:00 to see how he is!
*hugs* Ginny.... you and Ty are in my thoughts....
Hopefully Tasker will understand he needs to be a little more gentle with his smaller friend :)
I just spoke to the Dr, was suprised that the DOCTOR actually spoke to me.

Ty did well :D through surgery. They deepened the trochlear groove (which holds the knee cap in place) and then evened out the tension on the ligaments. He woke up easily from the anesthesia and has received a long acting narcotic for pain and is snoozing comfortably.

I had to explain to Tasker why Ty wasn't home when we got home......I don't think he understands. Tasker keeps wandering around looking for him :(
glad the surgery went well...Poor Tasker. You may have to get on the floor with him tonight and do some extra cuddle time! Give lil' Ty a gentle kiss for me when you see him!
Glad everything went well :)
I hope everything goes well for you and Ty, Ginny. We're sending good mojo your way!
Ginny,
I am so glad to hear that Ty made it through the surgery ok and that everything went well.
Yay! I hope he continues to recover well, so he can get the 2nd leg done!
I hope he is able to recover quickly. It will be really hard to keep him and Tasker quiet for 6 weeks!
 Hugs to you and Ty
Glad to hear everything went well!
He's a trooper! So glad the surgery went so well!! :phew: :excited:
Blue, Merlin and Panda are sending sloppy kisses over to their little buddy Ty for a quick recovery.

I'm sending hugs to his mom and dad as that's quite the ordeal as we all know when the "kids" are sick, mom and dad feel it too.

Hope he feels better soon!

Marianne and the boys
Hugs to you all, so glad all went well. :phew:

Hugs to your little man, just a soft one for us when you get him home.

Poor tasker he is missing his buddie by the sounds of it. :(
Tasker can't sleep, he's worried about Ty :( I'm just staying up to keep him company

I can't help but wonder what poor Ty is thinking right now..........does he wonder what kind of terrible place I've left him and WHY???????????
Hopefully he's gotten enough good drugs he hasn't noticed :?

Ask and you might receive... Glad he's doing well. Get rested up, you'll need it for when he comes home. THEN, you'll really start worring!
So glad to hear the surgery went well! The recuperation time will be hard, but soon this will all be behind you. Have you considered putting him in a crate for that timeframe? You could use a large one. That's what they told me to do with Chum, during one of the earlies diagnoses she received.

Does he need to get the other knee done once this one has healed?

I am sure he is just living in the moment and not wondering why or how he ended up there.

Can you bring Tasker to visit him?
How about some Bach's Rescue Remedy for Tasker? You'll have plenty of pain meds for Ty when he comes home.

We put Sam in the dining room, pushed or removed the furniture, put his giant crate in the room and then barricaded the two exits from the room. He could see over the barricade into the kitchen and could hear us in another nearby room. At first he was totally in the crate and then only when we were away.

None of the other dogs was interested in getting in to see him, just smelling him and sniffing when we'd take him outside for pee/poop was enough for them. Sam was alpha and that was enough knowing he was still around. We took a large beach towel under his belly and could support his rear end as we went down steps and around the yard. OK, it got peed on a few times as we misplaced it, but it washed easily  I was surprised he could poop from an upright position, but he did.

I hope all goes well for Ty and he recovers quickly.
I just spoke to the hospital and Ty is doing well :D , He is up moving, peeing :yay: and his pain is well controlled. I wanted to stop and see him tonight (the hospital is about 3 minutes from my office) but the Dr is afraid he will get to excited and thinks it is better for me to wait until tomorrow. :(

Luckily he is accustomed to being in a crated during the day. I also have a small ex pen that I'll set up in the kitchen for him. It will be absolutely imperative that I keep Tasker and Ty from rough housing for at least a month.

This morning on our way to work I was discussing to Doug what we were going to do about sleeping, Ty has always slept in OUR bed which is a very high four poster. I don't want him to jump off the bed at night. I just bought a set of steps for him but even those will be impossible for the first few weeks. I mentioned that I might have to sleep on the floor with him for a couple weeks. Without even hesitating Doug said, We'll stop tonight and buy an aero bed and we'll all move into the living room til Ty is better!!!!!! :hearts: What guy!!
:hearts: :hearts: You indeed get a good one. Mine would never sacrifice his bed.....oh, he did the night after my Gall Bladder surgery, but just one night
Not only does Doug look like Tom Selleck, but he has the heart of gold!! Wow, Gin! Did you get a hot, nice hunky guy or what??!! Be sure to post pic's of lil' Ty so we can all see how he is doing.

I'd be mad with worry too, if I could see him....but the doctors orders are the doctors orders...sigh

You did get a good one, Ginny!! What a great man you've got there!!

I'm very glad to hear he's doing so well. It will be a little tough at first until Tasker & Ty both get used to the new rules (no rough housing). But, they'll adjust and he will heal quickly. The weeks will go by faster than you imagine now.
Doug just realizes this is as close as he's getting to taking you camping.

Either that or the love :hearts: thing.

If all goes well Ty may come home tomorrow night or Sat morning. I have to call tomorrow morning to see how he is doing.
I am so relieved Ty is OK. Go Ty! Sorry you guys are going through this but Yay for the great outcome. Hang in there. We've slept on aerobeds more times than I care to remember with our recovering babies.

So far Ty has been pretty meepy....... (my word). He did sleep for awhile in his pen. Now he's in my lap and every now and then jumps like something hurts. I just gave him his pain med so hopefully he'll settle down. Tasker just wants to smother him!!!!
Tasker looks so worried! That is quite a scar. I hope his recovery is quick and that the pain meds are effective.

Does he have to get his other knee done after this?
Unfortunately yes, but I hope to be able to wait til I have this knee paid for...........

The vet said we might be able to wait 6 months to a year as long as we are careful.
Poor guy...
Oh my gosh, Tasker has such a look of concern.
What a good big brother!
That is some scar! Poor Ty :( I guess the don't do arthroscopic surgery on dogs. I hope he has a quick and painfree recovery. I've had knee surgery on both knees, so from one knee surgery patient to another, I feel your pain Little Ty... Hugs and kisses!
Awww poor little darling, you give both boys a hug from me. Tasker really does look concerned about ty, what a sweetie he is.

The surgery incision looks great, the vet did a wonderful job, I am sorry little bubbie ty had to go through this, but it is all worthwhile in the long term.

Please give ty a gentle hug and kiss from all of us so many thousand of miles away. He is such a brave boy.XX  And a sepcial sheepie kiss from the girls too, tasker is an awesome big brother, so lick kiss and slurp from the girls to tasker for being so wonderful. :clappurple: They would love him as their guardians too.
Well, the first night is behind us. It could have been better....but it could have been alot worse too. The aero bed is working, although it's not as comfy as I had hoped :( but I think Ty is a lot less comfortable than we are.

He slept fitfully for several hours at a time, seems to be happiest between us. He woke at about 3:30 AM and it was pretty clear he wasn't going to settle back down so I got up with him and gave him a pain pill, some food and water. He hasn't peed yet, which has me worried. Of course he hasn't had much to drink till just a bit ago.

Tasker is soooo worried about him he barely leaves his side. He slept on the floor next to the air mattress with his head up on the mattress. Ty is a bit snappy with him. I tired to use the hot pack I'm suppoesed to put on his leg 3 times a day but Ty will have none of it :( , I'll try again later.

We also have a massage and exercises that we are supposed to do 3-4 times a day. This rehabilitation is going to be a full time job.

If you haven't already, maybe try it only slightly warm? Better than nothing and you can work your way up on the heat over time.

It will get easier after a few days.

I feel for you... :(
Glad to see that lil' Ty is home. Tasker is so sweet to take such good care of his little brother! wow, how many stitches did Ty have?

Panda and I send light kisses his way too!
HAHAHAHA, I didn't count till you asked!!!!!! 8!!!! I wish
i had one of those baby front carriers, I haven't been able to put him down all day!!!

Yes Ron, nurses do worry about urine volume, ALL the time!!!

I just ordered a donut collar on the internet and had it over nighted, it looks like it will be much more comfortable than the cone. It was a little expensive but we'll need it again when he has the other leg done.
Poor Ty,

Hope he gets to feeling better quickly! Tasker is just precious taking care of his bro.
How IS Ty doing?
Thanks for asking Ron :)

Ty is doing GREAT! He is bearing weight on the operative leg much of the time and being a real peach about his physical therapy and exercises. He sleeps about 80% of the time, which is due to the pain medication and seems to know that he needs to stay quiet. I was worried about him running around and trying to play with Tasker but he seems to instinctivly know that he needs to stay quiet.

I called the Vet on Monday to see if I should cut down on the pain med since he doesn't seem to be in any pain but they said to keep givining it to kim, that sleeping and quiet are good.

He's getting wises to my ways of sneaking his medication into his food so I'm having to be more creative. so far we've slipped it in everything from peanut butter to cheese.
SO glad to hear Ty is doing so well!! And what a fantastic big brother Tasker is being!! Good thing his personality is so laid back, huh?

That's for sure!!! I know Ty is feeling better because he's getting grouchey, whe Tasker comes up to give him a sympathetic sniff Ty growls  , Tasker just kinda shrugs his shoulders and moves on!!!
Good news, yay!
I'm glad to hear Ty is having an uneventful recovery. Keep up the good work :D .
