Rudy made a run for it. I am still a little freaked out.

I am absolutely horrified.

I had been on my way to let Rudy and Hudson out for a pee, and stopped to use the bathroom myself first.

I came out and found Rudy peeing on the floor. It's been over a year since his last accident, and I didn't get mad at him or anything...I should have let him out first.

So, I went to the back door and let them both out, and look up and see them both pooping in the backyard. This doesn't sound like a bad thing...except there is supposed to be a closed gate preventing them from getting into the back yard. The only fenced part is a "run" type area known as Poo Corner.

Hubby was working in the yard yesterday and I asked him repeatedly if he had CLOSED and CHECKED the gates. He actually got snarky with me and told me to drop it already. Well guess what? It wasn't properly latched, obviously, and over the day the gate blew open.

I yelled "Dinner" and Hudson's tummy came bounding back, dragging him along, but Rudy RAN away from me. He made it to the river's edge (we back onto the Red River) and ran along the bank to the neighbour's house.

He would not come to me, or even look my way as I called to him. I eventually caught him (thank goodness) and he fought me tooth and nail to come back. He would not move.

I remained calm, and didn't yell or menace, but he was trembling when I caught him. He was paralyzed with fear. He would not walk, and kept trying to crumble submissively to the ground. I cannot figure out what happened. I had to keep my hand on his collar (he of course had gone out to pee without a leash) so we just walked a few steps, stopped and relaxed, and walked a few more.

I got him in, and he was still shaking and covered with burrs. I took at least a hundred from his fur, and he was cowering like he was afraid of me. It was as if he was trying to get away from the most violent abuser he'd ever met.

Gordon came home, and Rudy was still pretty sombre, and very submissive. Not his usual self at all. We haven't gone overboard soothing him. We are trying to behave as if nothing happened so he'll calm himself and forget, but my mind is still racing through all the horrible things that could have happened to him had I not gotten lucky and caught him.

I get the going through the open fence part, and I get the exploring part, and I even get the not wanting to come when called part, but I am not sure about the submissive cowering at the time on the way back, and now, three hours after the fact.

And in other news, we shaved a small poop chute on Hudson thirty six hours ago, and he's still skittering around freaking out from the draft on his bum. (It takes him a full three days to adjust every time.)

Neither of my dogs seems particularly sane today.

Thank goodness you were able to get him back! But, as to the cowering...I assume the environment he ventured into was new to him...maybe smells of other animals? Maybe those smells freaked him out? I am also thinking of you saying he peed on the floor inside...could he not be feeling well? We often overlook these little things that might point to something...Hope he is back to his usualy self soon...BTW, my dogs were acting strange the last night or two. I thought it was because of the unusally warm weather and the high winds...
Certainly not a very good day for Rudy. Maybe he just scared himself and is reacting to that. I know all the crazy things that go through our head at a time like that--all the what if's! Hugs to you both! :ghug:
How scary...for you both! :(
I'm very glad you caught him and he didn't get hurt.
Maybe it's something in the air, as Chewie and Gabby - both buddies their whole lives - got in a doozy of a fight tonight after class. :( We had to pull them apart.
Glad that everyone is safe. I think sheepies can be a funny bunch. Georgi sorts of wonders off in her own world in if I call her she stands there & me & sherwood have to fetch her. I think they have moments just like us. Maybe having a pee in the house had more effect on him also he might be sick ?. I would keep a eye on him
I am so happy to hear that you were able to retrieve Rudy. I know what a heart stopper that can be.
Oh...thank goodness you got him back :ghug: :ghug:

Could he have gotten upset over peeing inside when he knows he is not supposed to? Then add in getting out of the fenced area, and smelling different animal smells while free...and you could get a super freaked dog? Hope he is back to his good self this morning :ghug:
The Red River in springtime? That's scary! :twitch: I'm surprised Rudy's stomach didn't bring him inside as well. Maybe Rudy was reacting to your emotional state? It must have been really upsetting for you and he senses it and knows it was because he was "bad"?

Glad he was safe though! :phew:
Poor little guy, what a frightening experience. Hope all is well today.
Peeing inside? Could he have a UTI and it hurts when he pees.....pain and knowing he did wrong indoors, flees through open gate to avoid your wrath and escape his pain only to end up with burs hurting his feet, more pain and then the walk home on those painful paws? The fact he is having trouble settling down would have me looking at a physcial problem.

Rudy will give you an ulcer....yet.

He may be repeating a behavior of his past... regressing to a previous state of mind when a situation repeated itself. He may have caught he** in the past for having run off so he may have been expecting the same this time.

If you used say a #10 blade on his bottom, next time try a little longer blade like an 8 1/2 or 7. Sometimes a quick wash/dry after a shave will reduce irritation too..
I am wondering if Rudy was maybe channelling the past. I didn't say a word to him about the peeing. It was totally my fault and getting mad would not help at all. Although I was terrified I tried to use only positives when I called him, so I thought it would encourage him. I am still surprised it didn't so I am wondering if there may have been a time in his life when someone dragged him back by the collar and "punished" him for something. His reaction when I was bringing him back was so excessive.

He continued to be off most of last evening. He seemed better this morning. I also suspect that Hudson's weirdo behaviour has Rudy upset too. I checked the little prince's tushie...there's no sign of irritation and we didn't shave it very close. I am convinced it's the cold draft on his delicate bottom. He reacts the same way if we trim it with scissors too and that never involves getting close to his skin.

I think Hudson just really hates change. Move a chair to another spot in the house and he carries on about it too. He's just a fussy little girliedog with a hint of Napoleon complex.
Mady is the same when she gets her private bits trimmed up. It always takes her a few days to adjust. As for Rudy, how scary for both of you-I am happy that he is home safe and sound and I hope that he is back to his usual self soon.
Yeah I agree that the peeing in the house and the fear may be connected -- he may not be feeling well, he may be afraid/sorry about the peeing, the same about the grand escape.

Maybe a stranger was in the yard who opened the gate and Rudy was freaked by that, causing him to pee. This possibility may be your husband's favorite.

Good luck getting him calmed.
Any more news

Rudy seems closer to his old self today. Hudson is also better. He actually forgot to scuddle on his bum several times today as he changed locations. He even had a good play with Rudy, which I think was especially comforting for Rudy. So hopefully they are both on the road to returning to their own special (but comfortingly pedictable) buckets o'crazy.
