Liz Palika -Pet Expert, Award-winning Author Petra Burke Trainer and Co-host Kate Abbott Trainer and Co-host link to bios: http://www.petliferadio.com/ http://odeo.com/episodes/24338671-PetLifeRadio-com-Episode-37-Adopted-Dogs-Stages-of-Adjustment 1st month-Everything is new - Dog will be tentative - On their best behavior - Have to learn new house rules - The host referred to this as "guest behavior" 2nd month - Settling in - They've learned the routine - You'll start to see a little bit more of the dog's self - May start to bond with other people in addition to the main adopter 3rd month - Honeymoon is over - New owners get a bit of a shock - The Hosts compared it to "a house guest that starts his own rock grunge band in the garage" - It's a normal stage, happens with just about every normal adopted dog. - It's part of the adjustment but they may not progress into good behavior if you don't correct inappropriate behavior - All dogs go through these stages, younger ones will be a bit more difficult, older dogs will go through as well but won't be quite as challenging Tips - Once they arrive in their new home start training soon, (3rd month can be easier if training starts sooner) -Training means setting some rules for your dog. - Obedience helps establish relationship with the dog. - All family members need to agree to the rules so the household rules are consistent - Exercise is very important, do an appropriate amount of exercise for the age, health and type of dog. This will help keep the dog relaxed. If the dog is injured try to do things involving mental exercise. - Dogs live in the moment, once you adopt a dog you become his here and now. - Avoid the "pity pit" If you find yourself pitying the dog, stop. Pity doesn't help, Empathy can: "How can I help you feel better" - If the dog has a negative past, give the dog credit that they will be able to move on. |

I would say that the first 3 days are the honeymoon period for sheepdogs. They seem to go through those stages a lot faster! |
