Just a short note to ask if anyone has had a sheepdog
diagnosed with thrombocytopenia while undergoing
doxycycline treatment for Lyme and a second tick bourne disease.
In a nutshell, this is our current problem. We are trying to
gather info prior to our next vet evaluation.
The drs feel this is a autoimmune response , not a autoimmune
disease as he presents with fever/lethargy/and slight nosebleed
when the infection cycles.
If you have had this situation, appreciate any info
Breeders would like to hear from you if this situation
has presented in your dogs or a collegues

I don't have any info but prayers are still being sent for beautiful Bogart! It seems so many dogs have been affected by this lately that it's upsetting.

Scroll down just over halfway, to the Pediatric section, under adverse reactions, blood.
All antibiotics, to my knowledge, can depress the RBC and Platlet count - even the WBCs. It usually gets better after stopping the drug, and doesn't always show up in a short course of antibiotics. Long term usage of anitibiotics does increase the risk of it becoming permanent - but you have to look at what you are treating for, where you are in the course of treatment, success rate of treatment with this drug and the success so far in this treatment, the actual platlet count vs a normal count and weigh that against the risk of continuing treatment.

I agree, I seem to be hearing a lot more about Lyme's this year. I guess because it is a worse tick year than we have seen in awhile.

Just a short note to thank everyone for your support.
Had 2 vet consults today and Bogart is admitted to
a Vet ER hospital out of town for evaluation/treatment.
I'll be unavailable this week, but will post as soon as I
can.
Please keep him in your prayers, he is our sweet sheepie gentleman
who hopefully will be home watching TV with us soon.

Just back from a visit with Bogart at the hospital.
He is in good hands, the doctors will be running some
tests. They are starting a treatment plan addressing
his needs. He has settled in nicely considering this
is his first time away from home.
It will be a while before I can update again as he needs
time to have the tests done and evaluated.
I'll update asap.

go to hemopet.com. Jeanne lists treatment protocal. I would fax blood panels and a brief history. She knows more than anybody about blood and she knows this breed. I would do whatever she says to do. A customer of mine had this (not the Lyme issue), with a lot of pushing her vet did as Jeanne suggested. He is still with them thanks to Jeanne. They feel they would of lost him if they had not been hooked up with Jeanne

I am so sorry!
One of the health issues Hannah has recently overcome was low blood platelets. She hasn't had any issues pertaining to lyme disease, though. I will pm you some info. She was treated for many months for this condition and her platelet count returned to normal. We did however use treatments beyond the normal vetrinarian scope.
At the time of her treatment I had googled low blood platelets and didn't find much information that I could make sense of. I did however get much comfort from Marianne's previous posts regarding Shaggy.

Good news! Bogart can return home from the hospital tonight.
His platelet count is steadily improving.
He has been a model patient. 
The doctors are pleased with his progress and he will
have a followup later this week.

Todays blood work shows platelets arriving with normal range. 
We need more consistent blood work , but looking wonderful so far.

To update---
 Ticks
Found out today in addition to the strong Lyme test result,
he also tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
This clears up some questions we had, and the high fever and
nose bleed is a symptom of RMSF. Explains the thrombcytopenia too.
The RMSF is not usual in our area , but does present sporatically.
Now we have the complete picture of why he was so ill.
We are progressing well.
He has a good appetite and more energy every day. He is
giving us lots of hugs and kisses (and he is receiving tons of them) |
Patelet count increased within normal limits again this
week
Please keep the prayers coming, hopefully he will be
fully recovered in the next few weeks.
FYI-I asked the Halo Pet co staff Vet if their Halo Herbal
Dip (an essential oil product) could be used in addition to
topical tick applications like Frontline. It can be sprayed on when
mixed with water.
The note I received today is yes!
If you are in a high risk tick area you may want to consider
an essential oil product like this one. |
